Explain why most human activities in the Alps are concentrated on the valley floor

Lauterrbrunnen valley

Must human activities are concentrated on the valley floor because most of the ground is relatively flat ideal for building towns and houses. This also makes it a lots easier to look after farms as the farmers do not have to move there cattle as often leaving the farmers to have time to spend doing something else.

The valley floor is sheltered from the cold and wet weather if not the valley floor would not be here today, as the weather can change instantly leaving living there treacherous also if they were not sheltered many of the crops would get distorted with the bad weather. leaving the farmers with out any profits or money for when the cold weather sets in this could mean the families could suffer because of this.

Most of the soil up in the alps are two thin, stoney to grow plants and crops were as the on the LAUTERBRUNNEN VALLEY floor the soil so much better as it is thinker and has all the right nutrients to grow crops. Mover over if the soil was more fertile up on the alps it would mean more work of the farmers.

how women helped win the war

Woman and the First World War

Before the world war one broke out women, were only allowed to stay at home to cook and clean for their husbands. Sometimes they were aloud to go out and work but only to teach if they were lucky. This was all about to change.

In 1915 world, war one when war broke out (1914-1918) men had to leave to fight for the country on the front line, this meant the women had to stay behind. The government realised that the only way they could win the war was by bringing in the women to do the men’s jobs.

The jobs they had to do are;

·                     Working in the factorise making munitions

·                     Build ships

·                     Work on the railway

·                     Work in shops

·                     Work a doctors

·                     Work in shops

·                     Drive and work on the bus

·                     Doctors

·                     Help care for the troops

·                     Helped in the Women’s Royal naval Service

It was important that the women adapted themselves to work like the man. Due to the men being in the front line the women had to work in the factorise this was both risky and dangerous. During World War 1 over 400 women died from working in the munitions factories some of the explosions turned there skin yellow this was called TNT.

Some of the women went in to the Women’s Royal Naval service to help with the radio communications and cooking in the kitchens. The Women’s Royal Naval Service or other wise know as the (WRNS). Katherine Furse set it up in 1916

Suffragists and Suffragettes

Suffragists believed passionately in giving women the vote but refused to break the law.

Suffragettes believed in direct action and would do almost anything to get their way

The Suffragists and the Suffragettes are two groups of women both trying to get the "vote for women".

Suffragists

Are like cotton wool

The Suffragists belonged to the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies or other wise know as (N.U.W.S.S).  Milicent Fawcett foundered the group in 1897 as a suffrage group. The group was set up to let the women vote like the man and working class to help improve condition of the country.  They were trying to get the vote by holding peaceful petitions and holding meetings in the public eye but this way of getting the vote was not as effective as it was taking a long time. All these ways of getting there point across won a good deal of interest to there cause this way of getting the vote was taking too long and some woman couldn't wait that long so they pull out of the campaigning. Also they had Male supporters such as Herbert Asquith, the man were used to talk to the politicans as the only way the woman could get in touch with them was by letter. They had a bit of luck in 1870 when they were able to get the Women's Property act but not able to get the woman vote. Soon after they found there progress slow so Emmeline Pankhurst and her two daugthers took over.

Suffragettes

Are like Wasps

Suffragists were set up in 1903 by the WSPU (woman’s Social and Political Union) which was led by Emmeline Pankhurst. They were ready to take better action to get the Vote for Women unlike the suffragists. Emmeline Panhurst was part of the

suffragists but because of the lack of progress Emmeline and her two daughters Christable and Sylvia set up there own group called the WSPU.

They believed that the only way of getting the vote was by;

·                     Breaking windows

·                     Setting fire to post boxes

·                     Chaining them-self’s to railings out side the Buckingham Palace

·                     Marchers

·                     Committing arson

·                     Stop working and going on strikes

·                     Stopped eating but in 1909 they were force

·                                        Disturbing meetings of political opponents

·                                           Cutting telegraph wires

·                      Burning empty buildings

·                       Letter bombs

They did all this just to get the “vote for woman” some of the woman in the WSPU refused to do the housework for example the cleaning and the cooking as they were out all day campaign.
